Live updates: Seahawks at Rams on Sunday Night Football
FINAL | Rams 28, Seahawks 12
That should do it
On first and 8 with 1:36 left, Russell Wilson went deep toward Tyler Lockett in the end zone and was picked off by Troy Hill. With 1:25 left and the Rams with the ball, this one’s about over.

Rams made that look easy. Gurley runs the final 7 yards for the TD and this feels over at 27-9.

Now Cody Barton is hurt. He slammed his helmet down in frustration.

Adam Jude's third-quarter thoughts
Goff’s gifts
Seattle safety Quandre Diggs returned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown on the Rams’ opening possession of the second half, getting the Seahawks within 21-9.
Diggs picked off Jared Goff again on the next drive, this one a floated pass at the Seahawks’ 3-yard line.
How vital has the acquisition of Diggs been? Since his trade from Detroit in late October, Diggs has three interceptions, one forced fumble, one fumble recover and, now, one touchdown — all while solidifying a shuffled secondary in the second half of the season.
Poor protection
Through three quarters, the Rams have been credited with three sacks of Russell Wilson, with five QB hits in all.
That includes a sack by Aaron Donald late in the third quarter on third down, ending what was a promising Seahawks drive near midfield.
Wilson is 15 for 22 for 141 yards through three quarters, with two drops among his seven incompletions.
Where’s Tyler Lockett?
The answer to this question is in part answered by the note above — Wilson hasn’t had consistent time to find his favorite target.
But credit to the Rams, who have done a good job limiting Lockett so far. Before a 15-yard gain on the final play of the third quarter, Lockett had had just two catches (for nine yards) on three targets.
If the Seahawks can’t get him more touches, they almost certainly won’t be able to come back tonight.
Q4 | Rams 21, Seahawks 9
That will be the end of the third quarter. Was a good one for Seattle all things considered. Rams lead 21-9 but Seattle has the ball and still has life.

Unnecessary roughness on Metcalf
Wow, big penalty on Metcalf for the after the play penalty.
— Bob Condotta (@bcondotta) December 9, 2019
Blocked field goal
Q3 | Rams 21, Seahawks 9
After the Rams failed to reach the end zone, they tried for a 37-yard field goal, which was blocked by Rasheem Green. Score remains 21-9.
Rams keep leaving the door open. After Kupp misses Higbee the Seahawks block the field goal — Rasheem Green gets the credit. Still 21-9 and Seattle takes over at its own 27.
— Bob Condotta (@bcondotta) December 9, 2019
Rasheem Green, the former USC standout, with the blocked kick there.

Penny leaves game, tweets message to fans

Seahawks follow pick with three and out
Seahawks three and out and the bad thing, obviously, is the field position here.
— Bob Condotta (@bcondotta) December 9, 2019
Diggs again!
Another Diggs pick, But this one is also basically a punt. Seattle will have the ball at its own 3. Still,Seattle gets the stop.
— Bob Condotta (@bcondotta) December 9, 2019
Q3 | Rams 21, Seahawks 9
There's a Goff Gift and Seattle is back in it. Diggs with the pick six.

Bob Condotta's halftime thoughts
Seattle looks tired
This was always going to be a tough game with going on the road following a Monday-nighter.
And the Seahawks looked like a tired team throughout the first half in allowing the Rams to gain 240 yards and go on three long touchdown drives in taking a 21-3 halftime lead.
Seattle has shown an ability to come from behind all season but this is really upping the degree of difficulty.
Seattle right to go for it on fourth down, but call might’ve been wrong
I have no issue with Seattle going for it on fourth and one at the Rams’ 24 yard-line.
But the playcall seemed a little too cute, with Wilson rolling out and throwing to Malik Turner, who dropped a pass that was a little behind but was certainly catchable.
The idea of trying to get a big play makes some sense in that situation.
But with Chris Carson and the way Seattle has been running it — he averaged more than 6 yards a carry in the first half — it seems like just giving it to Carson to get the foot that was needed to keep the drive alive would have made the most sense.
Tailback is going to be an issue
What had become a pretty dangerous two-tailback tandem appears to be no more for the foreseeable future, if not the rest of the season, with Rashaad Penny leaving in the first quarter with what appeared to be a significant knee injury.
And that is going to make the tailback spot a little of an issue going forward.
Seattle had hoped to not have to overuse Chris Carson as it faces six games in six weeks to end the season and then the playoffs.
But all that’s left behind Carson is the enigmatic C.J. Prosise, who has shown flashes of ability but hadn’t played since Oct. 20 before Sunday night, and rookie Travis Homer.
Prosise’s rustiness showed on the miscommunication on the fumble when he seemed unsure whether to take the ball from Wilson on a zone read.
Jared Goff: 15-for-18, 184 yards, 2 TD, 0 sacks, 146.3 rating.
— Adam Jude (@A_Jude) December 9, 2019
Q2 | Rams 21, Seahawks 3
Cooper Kupp sighting — in the end zone. With 51 seconds left in the half, Jared Goff hit Kupp with a 10-yard TD pass to extend the Rams’ lead to 21-3.
Cheerleader delay
Game delayed due to cheerleaders lingering on the field. "We need the cheerleaders off the field please.''

Fourth-down failure
Seahawks with a fourth and one at the 24 and going for it.Bringing in the heavy set.
— Bob Condotta (@bcondotta) December 9, 2019
Bootleg pass to Turner and he basically just drops it. Would have had the first easily.

The Seahawks are in trouble in the second quarter. Jared Goff hit Robert Woods for a 2-yard touchdown pass. 14-3 Rams, 11:28 left in the second.
Adam Jude's first-quarter thoughts
Penny’s out
Rashaad Penny suffered a left knee injury on his first touch of the game, at the end of a 16-yard reception on a screen pass from Russell Wilson.
Penny rolled over in front of the Seahawks sideline and pounded the grass in frustration, a reaction that suggested a potentially serious injury. A few minutes later, the official announcement came — Penny is out for (at least) the remainder of the game.
What a bummer for Penny, who had two of the best games of his career the past two weeks and was finally starting to look like the first-round talent the Seahawks thought they were getting in 2018.
Carson hits 1,000
Penny’s injury leaves the Seahawks with C.J. Prosise and rookie Travis Homer as the backup running backs. Of course, the injury likely means even more touches for Chris Carson, who has already been one of the busiest and most productive running backs in the NFL.
Carson needed 19 yards to reach 1,000 yards for the season, and he had 26 yards on six carries in the first quarter.
Quick strike
The Rams, much like the Vikings last week in Seattle, made quick work on their opening drive to take a 7-3 lead.
The big breakdown came on the left side of the Seahawks’ secondary, when Jared Goff found tight end Tyler Higbee wide open for a 33-yard gain to the Seattle 1. Malcolm Brown scored on a 1-yard run on the next play.
More on Penny's injury
Official announcement that Penny is OUT for the rest of the game. So, Prosise and/or Homer would have to spell Carson. And that obviously means this could be a significant injury for Penny.
— Bob Condotta (@bcondotta) December 9, 2019
Seattle running back Rashaad Penny suffered an injury to his left knee on the first series of Sunday night’s game and was listed as out for the rest of the night.
His reaction to the injury and the way he limped slowly off the field seemed to indicate the injury could be significant.
Penny was injured when he was tackled by former UW standout Taylor Rapp at the end of a 16-yard reception with 11:51 to play in the first quarter. He had taken a short pass from Wilson on a play-action pass and attempted to evade the tackle of Rapp near the Seattle sideline.
Penny rolled onto his front and pounded the turf as the play ended.
After being examined on the bench and then in the observation tent he limped slowly to the locker room accompanied by three team trainers/physicians.
Penny, the team’s first pick in the 2018 draft, was coming off the best two-game stretch of his two-year career with 129 yards on 14 carries against the Eagles on Nov.24 and then 74 on 15 carries against the Vikings, when he also scored touchdowns both running and receiving.
Q1 | Rams 7, Seahawks 3
Well that was less than ideal. The Rams took the lead on their first drive, Malcolm Brown finishing off the scoring drive with a 1-yard TD.
That, combined with Rashaad Penny’s injury, makes for an undesirable start for the Seahawks.
Q1 | Seahawks 3, Rams 0
A decent start for the Seahawks, who get on the scoreboard first with a 39-yard Jason Myers field goal. 3-0 Hawks.
Penny hurt on run
Rashaad Penny, who has had a strong past couple of games, had a good start on a 16-yard catch and run but came off the field holding his leg after being tackled by former Husky Taylor Rapp. His return is questionable.
Penny has a knee injury and return is listed as questionable.

Penny was looked at by trainers on the bench and now is going in the blue tent. Wilson sacked on third down so a field goal attempt upcoming.
— Bob Condotta (@bcondotta) December 9, 2019
Pass to Penny and he gets first down but now is down.

Seahawks call tails, turns up heads, Rams defer. Seattle to get ball.

America's pick
Here’s the NBC pregame show’s predictions, including viewers picking the Seahawks:
Kendricks, Ansah inactive
Seattle’s inactive players for Sunday’s game included two defensive starters — strongside linebacker Mychal Kendricks and defensive end Ziggy Ansah.
Kendricks was listed as doubtful for the game due to a hamstring injury and will be replaced by Cody Barton, who will make his first career start, though the Seahawks are also expected to play more nickel than in most other games this season.
Ansah was listed as questionable with a neck injury though he practiced on a limited basis all week. Coach Pete Carroll had said Friday that Ansah had a good chance to play but that he would also be re-evaluated on game day.
Ansah apparently didn’t pass the test during his pregame workout to get cleared. Ansah suffered a stinger on the final series of last Monday’s win over the Vikings.
Both players have roster bonuses for being on the active roster each game — $125,000 for Kendricks and $93,750 for Ansah.
Seattle’s other inactive players contained no surprises: tight end Luke Willson, fullback Nick Bellore, receiver John Ursua, offensive lineman Phil Haynes and cornerback Neiko Thorpe.
Thorpe had sports hernia surgery this week and is out for the season while Willson (hamstring) and Bellore (hamstring) had each been listed as doubtful.
Seattle also listed Jadeveon Clowney (core) as questionable but Carroll indicated Friday he would play and Clowney is among the team’s active players.
The Rams’ inactive players included tight end Gerald Everett, who had seven receptions for 136 yards in the first game between the two teams but is battling a knee injury, and starting right tackle Rob Havenstein (knee). Havenstein has not played since Nov. 10. Bobby Evans will again start in his place.
Seahawks inactives
Mychal Kendricks among Seattle's inactives. So Cody Barton will start at SLB but also expect a lot of nickel.
— Bob Condotta (@bcondotta) December 8, 2019
Rams' inactives: Dont'e Deayon, David Long, Jake Gervase, Natrez Patrick, Jamil Demby, Rob Havenstein and Gerald Everett.
— Rich Hammond (@Rich_Hammond) December 8, 2019
A win tonight would be Pete Carroll's 100th in the regular season with Seattle. Meaning, if my math is correct, averaging 10 wins a season for his 10 years as coach.
