It’s been a really good year for streaming, with the biggest selection we’ve ever had on all platforms. We previously wrote about best films of all time in the health and wellness categories, as well as some of the best movies that came out this year. Here’s a list of what’s available in December on streaming services. This month will also mark the first full month of the newest streaming service, Disney+, which brings us all our favorite Disney films, including the first one on our list.
Inside Out
This beloved animated film takes you into the mind of a young adult who is dealing with many emotions, each of which are personified in her “brain” by a brightly colored character. Meet Joy, Anger, Sadness, Fear and Disgust who live inside Riley, a girl who is dealing with a recent move to San Francisco. When her emotions are really low, all that are left in “headquarters” are Anger, Fear and Disgust. In true Pixar form, the viewer goes on a journey through dealing with emotions and mental health that leaves you feeling good at the end.
Available on Disney+.
Wish Man
This theatrical film tells the inspiring story of the person behind the Make A Wish Foundation. Frank Shankwitz is a motorcycle cop with a traumatic past. He gets in an accident during a high-speed chase that nearly takes his life. While he’s recovering, he spends time with a terminally ill child whose dying wish is to become a motorcycle officer. And the rest, as they say, is history. Be prepared for an emotional journey about life and death and helping others.
Available on Netflix on Dec. 3.
Marriage Story
Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson are a couple going through a divorce in this drama/comedy. “This wonderfully sweet, sad and funny film simply delivers more moment-by-moment pleasure than anything else around,” writes Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian. You watch as Johansson and Driver’s characters navigate a divorce and come to terms with what that means for themselves and for their child.
Available on Netflix on Dec. 6.
The Tribes of Palos Verdes
This dramatic film starring Jennifer Garner follows a family after they move to sunny California. If you want a rollercoaster of a film that touches on love, marriage and drug addiction, this movie delivers. The teenagers in the family go through some trying times, and one of them turns to surfing while the other to prescription drugs. The film is dark and moody and gives a raw look at several key issues that are affecting families in the U.S. today.
Available on Netflix on Dec. 1.
Humans: Series 2
“It’s a machine until proven otherwise.” The robots are here, and they look an awful lot like humans. In this U.K. television series, humanoid robots are sold as appliances to help out at home and in the workplace. In the first season, strange things begin happening, and some of the robots seem to have memories and their own thoughts. This series brings to light some of the biggest questions surrounding artificial intelligence and flirts with a future where robots may actually become sentient. Starring Gemma Chan in her first breakout role (the first season aired in 2015), you will be both creeped out and intrigued.
Season 2 available on Amazon Prime on Dec. 21. Season 1 is already available on Amazon Prime.
Tee Shot: Ariya Jutanugarn
Ariya Jatuanguarn is a Thai golfer who competes on the American circuit. In 2016, she became the first Thai golfer of any gender to win a major championship and won the U.S. Women’s Open in 2018. At only 23, her age only makes her victories that much more impressive.
Available on Netflix on Dec. 1.
Rocky (I through V)
“It’s not about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit.” If you are a fan of the Rocky franchise, you’ll be happy to know that all of the movies will be available on Amazon Prime. Get your sports movie fans together for a Rocky marathon and take in every training montage.
Available on Amazon Prime Dec. 1.
