Just like last year, the Oscars has no host but called upon some comedians to kick off the show with jokes. This time, past hosts Steve Martin and Chris Rock came out and poked light fun at the Academy and those in the room.
“We’ve had a great time not hosting tonight,” they said at the end of the set. Here are some of their jokes:
“Wow Janelle Monáe, incredible. That was incredible,” Rock said. “While we were backstage, Steve says to me, ‘J. Lo is killing it two weeks in a row!’”
“I’m a little conflicted,” Rock said. “I was driving here tonight and seeing there’s a terrible homelessness problem --” then Martin cut him off. “So many stars!”
“Mahershala [Ali] has two Oscars,” Rock said. “You know what that means when the cops pull him over? Nothing!”
“Jeff Bezos is here,” said Rock. “Wow, great actor!” said Martin.
“He’s got so much cash, when he writes a check, the bank bounces,” Rock said. “Jeff Bezos is so rich, he got divorced and he’s still the richest man in the world. He saw ‘Marriage Story’ and thought it was a comedy.” (Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post).
“I thought there was something missing this year” from the best director category, said Martin. “Vaginas?” asked Rock.
“‘Ford v. Ferrari’ is nominated. I got a Ford and Ferrari and it ain’t even close. That’s like Halle Berry versus gum disease,” said Rock.
“Cynthia Erivo did such a good job in ‘Harriet’ hiding black people, the academy got her to hide all the black nominees,” said Rock.
“Think how much the Oscars have changed in the past 92 years,” Martin said. “Back in 1929, there were no black acting nominees.”
“And now in 2020, we’ve got one,” Rock said.
“Amazing growth!” Martin added.
