How to watch: Capitals vs. Islanders - NBCSports.com

From one aggressive forecheck to another, the Capitals were able to get the win on Friday, but fell 6-4 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday. They are now 0-1-1 against Carolina this season.

Check out a recap of the game here.

Observations from the loss

Adjustments still needed

What Carolina (and Columbus) have shown this season is that aggressive forechecks and quick odd-man breaks are still an issue for Washington. They were OK against it on Friday not allowing the Blue Jackets to take control of the game, though the offense was still largely limited. Against a team like Carolina which has a lot more offensive weapons, it resulted in a 6-4 game instead of a 2-1 game.

One thing the Caps do way too much in the face of the forecheck which has not been effective is they try too many long stretch passes. I get the thought. Hey, there are two, maybe three players in my face, if I get the puck past them we will have an odd-man break! The forecheck is not just about getting pressure in the face of the puck-carrier, it is about getting in passing lanes and forcing those passes. Short, easy passes are more effective than longer deep ones because Carolina is cutting off those passes fairly regularly. They want to force Washington into those passes.

Foegele

Warren Foegele came into Saturday with six goals and 10 assists for the season. He scored two goals and an assist in this game. Sometimes a player just has confidence against another team and Foegele certainly has that against the Caps after last year's playoff series.

In those seven playoff games last season, Foegele scored four goals and two assists. Against a team with players like Sebastian Aho, Teuvo Teravainen, Jordan Staal and Andrei Svechnikov, the Caps need to account for Foegele in future matchups as well.

Playing time

In the second leg of a back-to-back with no Tom Wilson or Michal Kempny plus with Christian Djoos getting injured in the first period, playing time was pretty well distributed throughout the lineup. John Carlson played 27:04 which is pretty much par for the course for him. It was not as if Carlson and Dmitry Orlov both had to play 35 minutes or anything.

Turning point

Foegele's first goal came eight seconds into the second period as Carlson was caught too high in the neutral zone off the opening draw. Jaccob Slavin passed to Jordan Staal who was in on a 2-on-1 since Carlson was so high up. Staal fed Foegele cross-ice for the goal past a helpless Braden Holtby.

The two-goal deficit proved insurmountable. Carolina responded quickly after each of the Caps' first three goals to restore their two-goal lead.

Play of the game

When Evgeny Kuznetsov gets a seam and can turn on the jets, it is amazing to watch.

Stat of the game

Alex Ovechkin scored a power play goal in the second period, the 256th power play goal of his career. That pulls him into sole possession of third place all-time in power play goals, passing Teemu Selanne.

Quote of the game

Braden Holtby didn't have many answers for what went wrong. Carolina simply executed on their chances, especially in the second period.

"The second, it seemed like we played pretty well, they executed on some pretty big plays. They're a team that kind of does that so I don't know. It's a frustrating one, that's for sure.

Fan predictions

Well, that's certainly bold.

Ten combined goals.

Kuznetsov's goal was pretty "Kuznetsov" though it wasn't a lacrosse goal.
